Debt Collection Scams on the Rise

Scammers posing as debt collectors are contacting people by phone and text, using threats of arrest, court, or wage garnishment to scare victims into paying fake debts. These callers often refuse to provide written proof and violate the rules real collectors must follow.

Who Is at Risk

People with unpaid bills, multiple debts, or anyone worried about owing money are most at risk.

What to Watch For

Unsolicited calls or texts demanding immediate payment, threatening legal action, refusing to provide written validation, or asking for payment by unusual methods.

What to Do

Hang up, do not pay or give personal or bank details, and independently contact the lender using a phone number from their official website; request written validation of any debt before taking action.
