PayPal User SSNs Exposed: Change Passwords ASAP

PayPal says a software error in a loan application exposed customers’ personal information, including Social Security numbers, for nearly six months and affected users are being notified.


Who Is at Risk

PayPal customers who used the loan application or provided personal identification, and anyone whose Social Security number or linked financial accounts were included.

What to Watch For

Watch for unfamiliar charges, unexpected credit checks or new accounts in your name, plus suspicious emails or calls asking for personal information.

What to Do

Immediately review your PayPal and bank/credit card statements for suspicious activity, change your PayPal password and enable two-factor authentication, and consider placing a free credit freeze or fraud alert with the credit bureaus.
