Warning Signs of Medicare Fraud

Medical identity theft is a serious crime that happens when someone uses your personal information without your consent to commit Medicare fraud or other crimes.

Who Is at Risk

Anyone with Medicare benefits—especially older adults, caregivers, and those who share personal documents—is most at risk.

What to Watch For

Scammers may call, visit, or offer free services in order to steal information or bill for services you didn’t get. Watch for unfamiliar charges or services on your Medicare statements, unexpected calls or visits claiming to be Medicare, offers of free gifts for care, or requests for your Medicare or Social Security numbers.

What to Do

Regularly compare your Medicare statements to the care you actually received, and report any suspicious activity to 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
