Scammers Pose as Courts in New Traffic Violation Text Scam

Scammers are sending highly convincing text messages posing as state courts or traffic agencies, claiming you have an unpaid traffic violation. The message pressures you to scan a QR code to pay a small fee (often under $10) to avoid penalties like fines, license suspension, or legal action. The QR code directs you to a fake payment website that captures your credit card details, personal information, and sometimes login credentials.

Who Is at Risk

Anyone who receives a surprise text about a traffic fine or court payment, especially if they recently received a ticket.

What to Watch For

Be cautious of unexpected messages demanding immediate payment, especially ones that include a QR code or a link and mention a small fee.

What to Do

Do not scan the QR code or click any link; instead, verify the notice by contacting the court or agency using an official phone number or website you find yourself.
