Is your phone listening? Why you should disable microphone access for apps you’re not using

Many mobile apps — including popular free games — request microphone access even when they don’t need it, creating a risk that apps could collect audio or use the mic in ways you didn’t expect. Turning off microphone permission for apps you aren’t using helps protect your privacy.

Who Is at Risk

Anyone with a smartphone who has installed apps that request microphone access, especially free or little-used apps.

What to Watch For

Apps asking for microphone permission when installed or updated, unexpected voice-related prompts, or sudden targeted ads that reference recent conversations.

What to Do

Open your phone’s settings, review app permissions, and revoke microphone access for apps you don’t actively use, only re-enabling it when necessary.
